PSL8: Unique and successful Season of Cricket

The eighth edition of The Pakistan Super League (PSL) concluded successfully. There were a lot of doubts and concerns initially over its holding and the venues of the matches. While the country’s political situation was in shambles, there was little chance of being appreciated by the people suffering from economic difficulties.

The new management of the PCB could not prepare well for this PSL8 edition. The current chairman Najam Sethi has revealed that the League was left like an orphan child. The franchises were unhappy while relations with the sponsors were frosty, in such a situation, the successful conduct of the PSL looked like a ‘Mission Impossible’.

Although Najam Sethi has become the chairman of the PCB with the blessings of the present government and his leadership is the result of a state order, he is doing so as a constitutional head or perhaps even more.

The most surprising thing was when the league’s matches in Lahore were in jeopardy. The caretaker government’s financial demand led to the suspension of the League for a few hours.

In PSL 8, if some things were traditional, some innovations were also adopted, which transformed this league from an emergency league to a normal league for the first time.

Home and Away matches

For the first time in the recent league, an original form of home and away matches has been revealed. Although this rule has been applicable since the first edition of the league, it was absolutely not possible in the UNITED Arab Emirates when the league was taking place.

Even when the league started in full swing in Pakistan, it remained in different phases and the real form could not be revealed. Perhaps due to security and logistics issues, the management kept half the matches in one venue and half in another place.

But for the first time in the recent PSL, two regions were made and home and away matches were held.

Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators played their home matches in Rawalpindi and Karachi, but the remaining four teams continued to play in their cities.

For the first time, the match was played in one city on the same day, and on the second day, teams reached another city, which increased the trend of competition in the PSL.

Thrilling cricket

Wherever cricket leagues are taking place around the world, critics call them fixing and moneymaking. Most matches are non-competitive and no more than just an exhibition. But the PSL has denied this allegation from day one.

In the past, there have been a large number of matches when the decision was made on the last ball and the thrill of the match remained till the end.

The final showed the fans the color of the struggle to win with high-level cricket, Qalandars’ victory by one run on the last ball was the mirage of this 34-day tournament.

Every match in this league became the basis for the next match and gave every team hope to move forward. If the PSL matches are seen in a glimpse, they look like IPL matches.

There is less cricket and more showbiz in IPL but PSL has infused a new spirit in competitive cricket.

New Talent

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Najam Sethi claimed in a press conference before the final match that this season of PSL has overtaken the Indian Premier League in digital ratings.

He said that the eighth season of PSL achieved a digital rating of 150 while IPL could get 130 ratings.

Psl brings out some new talented players every year who become members of the national team within a few days. New talent emerged this year too but this time it is much more than before.

If a new talent like Ehsanullah, Abbas Afridi, Saim Ayub Usama Mir, and Usman Khan came out, the performance of Azam Khan, Mohammad Haris, Zaman Khan, and many more players improved.

They got more opportunities and the fans got to see full cricket. If some players are called this year’s discovery, they can be called Saim Ayub Usman Khan and Abbas Afridi.

Lahore Qalandars’ Journey

Lahore Qalandars team is the most unfortunate and most fortunate team in this league. For 5 consecutive years, a team that has only learned to lose, and after every match, memes are made to mock it, He, whose coaches were heavily criticized, whose players were called Relukatte, continued his journey with patience and perseverance and made hard work his motto.

Shaheen Shah Afridi

Today he has been rewarded for his hard work. They became the first team in the league to win the league for two consecutive years and win well.

Although Qalandars had captains like McCullum on this journey, the best batting and bowling were together, but the goddess of luck was not kind to them, Now under the captaincy of Shaheen Shah Afridi, the goddess of luck has also become kind, so the trophy has also been reached.

              Sponsors’ dispute

Some betting websites have been sponsors in PSL for the last 2 years. Last year, when a betting website was criticized, their managers changed the name to deceive the public, but could only partially change the name due to the original purpose. Despite the attention of the media, when the PCB officials did not listen and the concerned authorities did not take notice, so this year more betting websites emerged as sponsors.

When Karachi Kings and Multan Sultans put the logos of these Satta companies on their shirts, critics objected. Multan Sultans played the entire tournament with the company logo but in the last match, Mohammad Rizwan tried to hide it. Betting or betting is prohibited in Pakistan and its promotion is not allowed.

But under what law did these betting sites get permission and what publicity do they want when they do not even have operations in Pakistan? Is it a contract with the team and their interests are in western countries? The PCB has not yet given any stand on this, while the concerned authorities are also silent.

The last player to play PSL

PSL 8 can also prove to be the last PSL for some players because given their performance, it seems very difficult for them to get selected in a franchise again and in the recent season, apart from this, there are many players whose cricket is now coming to an end. Colin Munro, Ben Cutting, Kieron Pollard, Jimmy Neesham and Sharjeel Khan are also among the players who will now find a place difficult.

New Speed Gun Ihsan Ullah

Many young players have proved themselves this season and surprised everyone with their performances. Their inclusion will strengthen teams but older players will have to be fired to pick new players.

So the franchises will have to start their work for the next season now, some have started and started cutting the squad for the next season.

With all its positives and negatives, the 8th edition of PSL was full of fun. Some players gave great performances and some were ineffective. Multan Sultans were the best team in the league and took all the awards except 2 but not the winning trophy.
